Whole-body Wellness for Your Pet
At Willowrun Veterinary Hospital, we believe in a complete approach to veterinary medicine — one that brings together the best of both conventional and alternative care. Our integrative philosophy means we don't choose between modern science and time-honored healing traditions. We combine them thoughtfully, tailoring each treatment plan to the individual needs of your pet.
Our integrative services include acupuncture, laser therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (pEMF), Traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and personalized nutritional support — all working alongside conventional veterinary medicine to support your pet's health from every angle.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a technique from traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years. It consists of inserting very thin needles into specific pressure points of the body to promote healing, relieve pain, and release stress-relieving hormones and anti-inflammatory substances.
The benefits of acupuncture are numerous. Unlike medications and surgeries, which can carry unwanted side effects, acupuncture's side effects are entirely positive:
- An increase in blood circulation
- Stimulation of the nerves
- Pain relief
- Improved healing
- Psychological benefits such as reduced anxiety
- Relief of muscle spasms
- A release of balancing hormones
- A release of endorphins (a feel-good chemical)
- A release of cortisol (a natural steroid)
Although the needles may seem intimidating, the procedure is not painful for small animals — in fact, it is deeply relaxing, and some animals may even become drowsy as calming chemicals are released in the brain. Larger animals may experience minor sensation during insertion due to needle size, but once in place, there is no pain.
Acupuncture may be a great option if your pet experiences:
- Arthritis or degenerative joint disease
- Hip dysplasia
- Post-surgical pain
- Endocrine disorders
- Respiratory conditions such as asthma
- Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea
- Certain reproductive problems

Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine has existed for approximately 5,000 years, and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) has long applied these principles to animal care. At Willowrun, we draw selectively from this rich tradition, incorporating herbal support where it complements a pet's overall treatment plan.
TCVM and Western medicine work well together because each offers what the other lacks. Western medicine acts quickly and excels at treating acute conditions. TCVM addresses not just the disease, but the entire bodily system — with few, if any, negative side effects.
Herbal formulas are administered orally, typically in capsule or pill form for dogs and cats, and may be beneficial for conditions including:
- Skin diseases
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Hormonal disorders
- Epilepsy
- Allergies
- Cancer support
- Kidney or liver conditions
- Behavioral issues
- Chronic lameness
